The band was formed by Cedric Bixler-Zavala (vocalist) and Omar Rodríguez-López (guitarist), who were former members of the post-hardcore band At The Drive-In. The Mars Volta's debut album, De-Loused in the Comatorium, was released in 2003 to critical acclaim. It was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance and was certified Gold in the US.
