Gabrielle Aplin - Topic

Born October 10th, 1992, Gabrielle Aplin’s musical biography is much like a lot of up and coming artists in the 21st century. Aplin is primarily self-taught, playing multiple instruments, singing, and writing music all on her own. Aplin grew up in a small village called Sutton Binger, the eldest of two children. Her foray into music began at the age of eleven when her parents bought her first guitar. She was influenced by the music of Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, and Bob Dylan during her formative years, and would eventually go on to study music at City of Bath College. It was posting covers of popular music on Youtube that gained her notice though. Some of the most popular covers posted on the site include her version of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” and Cee Lo Green’s radio friendly track “Forget You.” She mixed it up a bit by uploading her own music to the site including her original song “Home,” and started performing at local radio stations before getting her big break. She founded her own record label and released three EP’s from 2010 to 2012. She was invited to perform for the show “BBC Introducing” in 2011, and her cover of Coldplay’s “Fix You” became one of her most popular performances, garnering her major attention. By early 2012, she had signed with Parlophone records and began recording her debut album. Her own label would go on to focus on other up and coming artists, while 2012 and 2013 saw her on tour as the supporting act for several big names including Charlie Simpson, Gotye, and Ed Sheeran. Her songs also began to appear in popular television programs like “Teen Wolf.” 2013’s “English Rain” became her first major record release, and would spawn her own headlining tour.
