About RANK 1 - Topic
Rank 1 is the Dutch trance duo of Piet Bervoets and Benno de Goeij, pioneers known for their blend of melodic richness and driving energy. They prefer to talk about progression and perfection rather than “success,” believing that music is about constant evolution because, as they say, tomorrow counts.
The story began in the mid-1990s. Piet had already made waves with projects like R.O.O.S. (Instant Moments) and Silmarillia, while also exploring techno on labels such as X-Trax. In 1997, he met Benno, a classically trained musician with a sharp ear for melody. Their collaboration started as Pedro & Benno but soon reached global recognition as Rank 1 with the release of Airwave. The track became the first Dutch single to hit No.1 on the European Dance Chart, topping charts across the UK, Germany, the U.S., and beyond, eventually being released in over 40 countries.
Follow-up singles like Such Is Life, Awakening, and Breathing cemented their reputation, while their remix of Cygnus X’s Superstring turned an already iconic track into a timeless classic. Their debut album showcased their versatility, designed not only for dancefloors but also for deeper listening, and included a DVD of their rare live show at Trance Energy before 25,000 fans.
Despite their global impact, Piet and Benno remain modest, preferring their music to speak louder than words. Ordinary guys, perhaps — but with extraordinary talent.
