About Halou - Topic

Halou emerged from the fog of late-’90s San Francisco, blending trip-hop, dreampop, and electronica into a sound both intimate and expansive. Formed by husband-and-wife duo Ryan and Rebecca Coseboom, with engineer Count shaping the mix, Halou evolved from the ashes of their previous band Anomie, trading grit for gauze and riot for reverie.

Their debut We Only Love You (1998) introduced a lush, cinematic mood, which deepened across albums like Wiser (2001) and Wholeness & Separation (2006). In 2008, they collaborated with Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins, whose guitar shimmered through their self-titled album, while cellist Zoe Keating added haunting elegance to tracks like “Clipped.”

After a final tour with Bob Mould, Halou quietly morphed into Stripmall Architecture, a more experimental, theatrical incarnation that fused strings, film, and pop deconstruction.

In 2019, the Halou name returned with Brutalism For Lovers, marking a new chapter in their ever-shifting story. Halou remain less a band than a beautiful blur: part dream, part shadow, always just out of reach.
