Stoicism is a school of Hellenistic philosophy that was founded by Zeno of Citium in Athens in the early 3rd century BCE. It was influenced by Socrates and the Cynics, and it taught that virtue is the only good for human beings, and that external things are indifferent or irrelevant to happiness. Stoics believed that living in accordance with nature and reason was the way to achieve eudaimonia (happiness) and that emotions resulted from errors of judgment. Stoicism flourished throughout the Roman and Greek world until the 3rd century CE, and had many famous adherents such as Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius.
