A professional artist since the age of 19, Doug studied drawing and did his first year foundation program at the Art Institute of Boston where he started school in 1977. He spent the next four and a half years at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he won a traveling scholarship, and numerous other awards. He studied writing and European history at the University of Pennsylvania, and French at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Still fluent, he is an able translator as well. His book of Maupassant stories translated into Modern American English will be published this year. Currently residing in the Kennsington neighborhood of Philadelphia, he paints, and is writing an expansive and storied history of The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He says, "It is impossible to write about the history of art in America without talking about the Academy."

He produces a podcast with co-host Edgar Jerins about art (www.2-real.net).
